Telecoms Industry peak body Communications Alliance rebrands as The Australian Telecommunications Alliance

July 24, 2025-

Sydney, 24 July 2025: Communications Alliance, the peak body of the Australian telecoms industry, today unveiled its new name, brand, and website as the Australian Telecommunications Alliance (ATA).

Launched at the 19th annual Telecommunications Industry Excellence Awards in Sydney, the ATA’s new brand reflects the organisations’ renewed focus as the clear and undiluted voice of the Australian telecoms industry.

“Telecommunications networks and digital infrastructure are the foundation of the modern economy, and the Australian Telecommunications Alliance provides a trusted voice at the intersection of industry, government, regulators, and consumers,” said Luke Coleman, CEO of the ATA.

The organisation had been known as Communications Alliance since 2006, and over the past decade had broadened its membership to include digital platforms, streaming content providers, social media services and other players in the broader digital ecosystem.

The rebrand follows reforms to the organisation’s membership to focus the ATA exclusively on the telecommunications sector: carriers and carriage service providers; infrastructure, device, and equipment providers; and ICT service providers.

“The telecommunications industry faces its own unique policy and regulatory issues that are distinct from the broader digital ecosystem. By re-establishing the ATA’s focus on the telco sector, we will have a clearer voice on the issues that really matter to the industry,” Mr Coleman said.

The ATA is recognised as the body responsible for the development of industry codes under Part 6 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. The ATA is also recognised as an approved Standards Development Organisation (SDO), accredited by Standards Australia, to make technical standards under Part 21 of the Act. These codes and technical standards are registered with, and enforced by, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

The ATA is responsible for close to 130 industry codes, technical standards, guidelines and technical specifications.

“The ATA’s agenda is based on three strategic pillars: first, strong consumer protections – including the development of industry-specific consumer safeguards, and initiatives to protect Australians from scams.”

“Second, secure and resilient critical infrastructure – developing technical codes and standards to ensure that telecommunications networks interoperate seamlessly, and are resilient against outages and natural disasters.”

“And third, a sustainable investment environment – campaigning for the long-term growth of Australia’s telecommunications sector, where Australians continue to benefit from a vibrant competitive market and world-class digital infrastructure,” Mr Coleman said.
